Russian CEO faces trial for withholding $9.5M in wages from 2,000 workers
A company director in Tver is facing trial for withholding wages worth 736 million rubles ($9.5 million) from over 2,000 employees. The charges were announced by regional prosecutors on Friday, March 27. Authorities have already seized the accused's assets to cover potential repayments to workers. The case centres on the head of a Tver-based firm who allegedly failed to pay 2,286 staff members despite having the funds available. Investigators claim the company diverted money meant for salaries to other purposes. If found guilty, the CEO could receive a prison sentence of up to three years.
The trial will take place in Justice of the Peace Court District No. 23 in the Tver Region. Meanwhile, bailiffs have successfully recovered unpaid wages in a separate case, securing 1.2 million rubles ($15,500) for a Moscow woman from her former employer. The accused in the Tver case holds assets valued at nearly 1.2 billion rubles ($15.5 million), which have now been frozen to ensure possible compensation.
The prosecution highlights ongoing efforts to address wage violations in Russia. With assets seized and a trial pending, the outcome will determine whether affected employees receive their owed salaries. A conviction could also set a precedent for similar cases in the future.
