Get ready for another round of talks between Ukraine and Russia! Despite recent attacks on Russian airforce bases, including those in Eastern Siberia, prayers for a ceasefire are still in the air. Here's the lowdown on the current state of play.

The Latest Attacks

The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) claimed these attacks aimed to "destroy enemy combat aircraft." The long-prepared attacks targeted bases in Dyagilevo and Ivanovo near Moscow, as well as the base in Olenya in the Murmansk region in Russian Arctic - approximately 1900 kilometers from Ukraine.

A fire broke out at the Belaya base post-attack, according to the SBU. While a video emerged purporting to show burning aircraft and black smoke columns at the Belaya airbase, it was unverified by AFP news agency.

The Cost of the Conflict

The SBU reported that the attack caused damage worth more than six billion euros to the Russian airforce. Some 34% of the aircraft that carried strategic cruise missiles were affected, but these figures couldn't be independently verified.

Later, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed Ukrainian drone attacks on airfields in the Irkutsk and Murmansk regions using First-Person-View (FPV) drones. Although several aircraft were set on fire, no one was injured in the incidents. Suspects were detained for the attacks.

Terrorist Acts?

Authorities in the Russian regions of Bryansk and Kursk bordering Ukraine announced two bridges had collapsed due to "explosions" overnight. Seven fatalities and 71 injuries were reported in Bryansk, with the incidents deemed terrorist acts according to a spokeswoman for the Russian Investigative Committee.

Russia has repeatedly claimed acts of sabotage on railway lines since the start of the Russian offensive against Ukraine in 2022. Ukraine justifies these actions by stating that Moscow employs the railways to transport troops and weapons to its forces in Ukraine.

Heading to Istanbul

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced recently that Ukraine will send a delegation to the second round of talks in Istanbul, after keeping its participation open for a long time. The Ukrainian delegation will be led by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and negotiations are expected on Monday.

Diplomatic representatives from Germany, France, the UK, and other European states are reportedly advising Ukraine during these talks in Istanbul.

Escalating Tension in Sumy

Ukraine worries about a potential large-scale offensive in the eastern border region of Sumy, following statements by Zelensky that Moscow has amassed over 50,000 soldiers there. On Saturday, authorities ordered the evacuation of 11 villages in the region bordering Russia, as Russian troops have reportedly captured several villages in the area lately.

Long Journey Ahead

The Ukrainian and Russian conflicts are far from over, but hopes for peace still flicker. Stay tuned for more updates on the developments in this ongoing standoff!
