Ukrainian forces have wrecked havoc on at least 8 Russian strategic bombers using drones. Colonel Reisner, an expert analyst, explains the AI-driven strike and the devastating impact it's had on the Russians.

ntv.de: Hey, Colonel Reisner! The Ukrainian army's been pulling off some pretty impressive moves against the Russians – take the surprise offensive in Kursk and sinking their flagship Moskva, for example. But most of these operations have only affected the smaller scale, not really shifting the overall course of the war. Is this time different?

Markus Reisner: Well, let me tell ya, the big boys – the strategic bombers – keep slamming industrial targets (and many civilian ones) nearly every month. Trouble is, these bombers launch cruise missiles from a safe distance, making 'em hard to combat in the skies. The Ukrainians have always tried to take out the bombers themselves first, but they've had a tough time. This time, though, they managed to hit a saturation point. That means the Russians are feeling the effects and it's leaving deep wounds on their capabilities.

ntv.de: There aren't many satellite images from the damaged airfields yet. Can we estimate whether the Ukrainians are correct with their claims of up to 41 destroyed aircraft?

We're still waiting for more image material, but here's what we do know: on the first satellite images of the Belaya airfield, it's clear that up to four long-range bombers of the Tupolev TU-95 type and up to four medium-range bombers of the TU-22 type were destroyed. That's already eight strategic bombers gone just from one airfield. If five airfields were attacked, then the Ukrainian estimate isn't too far off. It could've laid low 30 percent of the Russian long-range air force. That's a massive blow!

How do you figure that?

The Russians are believed to have had around 100 strategic bombers before the attack, with about half operational. If a significant number of these 50 to 60 operational bombers were destroyed, it'll surely leave the Russians scrambling for backup. We'll have to keep our eyes peeled in the coming weeks and months to see if strategic air attacks on infrastructure and civilian targets drop – especially the use of cruise missiles. If they do, it'll be game over for the Russians!

Is this impressive not just for the everyday Joe like us, but also from an expert's perspective?

You bet your boots! This level of foresight – planning an attack like this a year and a half in advance, all leading to a spectacular success – is nothing short of remarkable.

Now, there's chatter that the Ukrainians pulled this one off before the next round of negotiations in Istanbul to throw a wrench in the works. What do you think?

The Russians have been concentrating heavy bombers on multiple sites in the past two weeks. Transport aircraft have even been showing up, seemingly loaded with cruise missiles. Seemed like they were gearing up for a massive attack, intended to bring immense pressure on Ukraine during negotiations. The Ukrainians swooped in and crushed their plans with this operation.

So, let's get this straight: it took a year and a half of planning to pull off this operation, small drones were flown in from Kazakhstan without detection, they were assembled in an old workshop, transported in wooden containers, equipped with explosives, and launched one by one. And what's more, these drones flew themselves to the airfields, using the Russian GSM network to home in on their targets. Even more impressive – they used AI to recognize the Russian aircraft on the ground!

Absolutely! Without human intervention, these drones locked onto their targets using AI based on the outlines of old Russian machines. When they got close enough, they dove down and struck the bombers. The whole thing was transmitted live, so the Ukrainian intelligence service watched it all unfold!

According to Ukrainian reports, they built 150 drones for the operation, using about 30 pieces per airfield, transported in two containers on one truck. After the drones were released, there was a self-destruct mechanism that triggered, causing the containers to explode.

The trucks were located just a couple kilometers from the airfields, with some videos showing smoke columns from burning aircraft in the background. Ukrainian intelligence officers were even recording comments about the attack from their hideout positions!

Politics*The Fury of PutinUkraine's Unprecedented Military Moves***Has this success exposed a major gap in Russia's air defense capabilities?

The Russians had air defense systems positioned around the airfields, but they didn't anticipate small drones. Despite numerous instances of small drones affecting Russian bombers and communication aircraft in the past, they should've been more prepared by now. It's a clear blunder on their part, leaving them embarrassed and raising questions about their strategic capabilities.

  1. The employment policy within the analytical community is expected to prioritize enhanced air defense capabilities in light of the unexpected drone attack on several Russian strategic bombers, as demonstrated by the success of Ukrainian forces in affecting the overall course of the war.
  2. The sudden escalation in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, underlined by the destruction of multiple strategic bombers using AI-driven small drones, has become a major focus in the general news, politics, sports, war-and-conflicts, and community policy sectors, with experts highlighting the implications for future strategic air attacks and infrastructure targeting.
