In a concerning development, three Russian MiG-31 fighter planes infiltrated Estonia's airspace on September 19th, spending a total of 12 minutes within the country's sovereign territory. This incident, condemned as 'brazen' by Estonia's foreign ministry, has added fuel to the growing tensions in the region.

The incursion over the Gulf of Finland is not an isolated event. Recently, Romania has also experienced intrusions into its airspace, contributing to the escalating tension. The root of the current crisis can be traced back to last month's incident where a Ukrainian drone crashed in Estonia, suspected to be due to a Russian signal jamming operation.

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described the Estonian incident as 'an extremely dangerous provocation.' In response, the Estonian government, led by Prime Minister Kristen Michal, decided to request NATO Article 4 consultations. The U.S. and many European states are committed to collective defense under NATO's Article 4, and the consultations will be initiated within the alliance.

This is not the first time a NATO-state has sought Article 4 consultations. Earlier this month, Poland did the same following a Russian fighter jet incident. The NATO-state delegation sent to Moscow to discuss Article 4 of the NATO Treaty was from Estonia.

The warplanes were intercepted by NATO, ensuring the safety of the region. However, the incident underscores the need for increased vigilance and cooperation among NATO members to maintain peace and security in the region.

The recent tensions are a reminder of the complex geopolitical landscape in Eastern Europe. As the situation continues to evolve, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritise diplomacy and dialogue to prevent further escalation.
