Russian aircraft detected traversing Estonian airspace, sparking a brief period of anxiety within the country.
In a significant development, Estonia has called for a NATO council meeting after three Russian jets violated its airspace near Vaindloo Island, over the Gulf of Finland, on Tuesday morning. This incident marks the fourth jets game by Russian jets in Estonia this year.
The Estonian Prime Minister, Kristen Michal, confirmed the incursion and described it as "unprecedentedly brutal." The Prime Minister also labelled the violation as "unacceptable" and called for urgent discussions within the North Atlantic Council.
In response to the incursion, jets of NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission were scrambled. The Russian jets, which lacked two-way radio communication with Estonian air traffic control, remained in Estonian airspace for 12 minutes before being forced to withdraw due to the NATO response.
The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs lodged a protest with the charge d'affaires of the Russian Federation in Estonia. Poland, too, has joined in the call for discussions, having downed several Russian drones at its borders with Belarus and Ukraine.
Article 4 of the NATO treaty focuses on discussions if the territorial or political independence of a member-state is threatened. By invoking Article 4, Estonia is seeking discussions within the alliance regarding the potential threat to its sovereignty posed by these jets game.
The US-led alliance's spokesperson, Allison Hart, confirmed the NATO meeting next week. The meeting will convene the North Atlantic Council in response to Estonia's request.
This incident occurred in the context of the ongoing russia news, raising concerns about potential escalation in the region. The international community will be closely watching the developments in the coming days.
