Russian air force intensively bombs Kharkiv, resulting in minimum of three fatalities
In an alleged act of retaliation, a Russian onslaught using drones and missiles rocked the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on Saturday, leaving at least three lives snuffed out and 21 injured. The assault, which comes after Ukraine's surprise drone attack on Russian military air bases, has been relentless, with no signs of a ceasefire on the horizon.
The attack was a brutal display of force, with aerial glide bombs, a regular feature in the Russian's fierce onslaught in the three-year-long war, reportedly among the barrage. The city has suffered its worst hit since the full-scale invasion in 2022, according to Kharkiv's mayor, Ihor Terekhov.
Local officials confirmed the attack, reporting 18 apartment buildings and 13 private homes left devastated. Among the injured, two children, a one-month-old baby boy, and a 14-year-old girl, bear the brunt of the carnage.
Following the attack on Kharkiv, Russia launched one of its fiercest missile and drone barrages the following day, striking at least six Ukrainian territories, leading to the deaths of at least six people and the injury of around 80 more.
Kyiv's recent move to strike Russian military air bases had prompted President Vladimir Putin to warn of "Operation Spiderweb," potentially escalating the conflict even further. In a statement filled with controversy, President Donald Trump had publicly indicated his disdain for these alleged counter strikes, stating, "Here we go, now it's going to be a strike."
The relentless attacks by Russia have raised questions about the possibility of peace negotiations between the two nations. With ongoing military operations and intensified airstrikes, hope for a resolution seems to remain elusive.
