In the ongoing war in Ukraine, a significant shift towards drone warfare is becoming increasingly evident. The latest developments in this conflict, marked by a series of drone attacks and innovative defense systems, are reshaping the face of modern warfare.

On July 4, 2025, Russia launched a massive drone and missile assault on Kyiv, the biggest air attack of the war to date. Over 500 drones and 11 missiles targeted Ukraine's capital, causing extensive fires and injuring at least 23 people[1][3]. This attack, which coincided with a phone call between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Putin, has raised concerns that Russia may not be intent on ending the conflict.

In response, Ukraine has developed a layered defensive strategy using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), often referred to as a "drone wall." This tactic involves deploying drones for both surveillance and airstrikes over defensive corridors to prevent Russian offensives. This innovative approach has proven effective in blunting major Russian advances along extensive frontlines[2].

Ukraine has also introduced a novel naval drone tactic, using bomber drones launched from unmanned surface vessels—essentially drone boats—to target strategic assets such as the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s radar installations in Crimea. Recent strikes have destroyed critical parts of the Nebo-M radar system[4].

Meanwhile, the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has emphasised that the USA has not stopped its weapons aid to Ukraine following a conversation with President Trump[5]. Germany is also reportedly considering the purchase of up to 2,500 GTK Boxer armored fighting vehicles and up to 1,000 Leopard 2 main battle tanks, as well as the acquisition of defense goods worth up to 25 billion euros (29.4 billion dollars) to deliver thousands of combat vehicles for the growing NATO military structure[6].

As the war continues, the production of intercepting drones in Ukraine is set to increase, and more drone operators will be trained to counter Russia’s offensive and conduct precision strikes[7]. The latest developments underscore the war in Ukraine as a pivotal moment in full-scale drone warfare, shaping future military doctrines and tactics[1][2][4].
