Russian Aggression Warned Against, as Leading Politicians Express Concerns Prior to Alaska Negotiations

European Parliament Members Call for Including Ukraine in US-Russia Talks

Seven high-profile members of the European Parliament have issued a joint statement ahead of the US-Russia summit in Alaska on Friday, urging the inclusion of Ukraine in the discussions. The statement, drafted by David McAllister, the chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, also calls for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine, and emphasizes the importance of international law in any potential deal.

The MEPs stress that aggression must never be rewarded or acknowledged, not just in Ukraine, but anywhere else. They also underline that peace negotiations must be preceded by an unconditional ceasefire and reject the idea of exchanging territories as a means to achieve a ceasefire.

The statement reiterates that any arrangement on terms dictated by Russia or that would reward its war of aggression against Ukraine would gravely endanger the security of the European continent. It also recalls that Russia has made unfeasible proposals in recent months as a pretext for prolonging the war.

The signatories of the statement include Pekka Toveri, Brando Benifei, Ville Ninistő, Michael Gahler, Michal Szczerba, Sandra Kalniete, and six other high-ranking deputies. The MEPs also call on the EU to provide political, economic, military, and humanitarian support to Ukraine until a peaceful resolution is achieved.

As of August 2025, there is no confirmed public update indicating that a US-Russia summit involving Ukraine directly has taken place or been finalized recently. The ongoing conflict shows continued Russian territorial gains in Ukraine, but diplomatic talks including Ukraine in US-Russia dialogues have not been concretely established in public sources.

Russian forces have steadily gained territory in eastern Ukraine, with recent but slower advances reported in August 2025. Diplomatic efforts remain strained, with Russia demanding recognition of annexed Ukrainian territories, which Ukraine and the West reject, complicating any potential negotiation framework.

In summary, while European lawmakers signal concerns about Russian gains, no breakthrough in US-Russia talks including Ukraine has been reported as of August 2025. The signatories of the statement call on the EU to remain united and believe that Ukraine must be supported by its partners to be in a position to reach a ceasefire.
