In the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the city of Kyiv and its surrounding areas have been subjected to repeated long-range missile and drone strikes, causing civilian casualties.

Since Wednesday evening, Russia has launched 309 drones and eight cruise missiles at Ukraine, resulting in significant damage. Tragically, twelve children were among the injured, and a six-year-old boy died on his way to the hospital in an ambulance.

The city of Chassiv Yar in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk has been claimed by the Ministry of Defense in Moscow as having been captured by Russian troops. However, this claim has been denied by the Ukrainian army. If true, the capture of Chassiv Yar could pave the way for Russian forces to advance on the remaining civilian strongholds in Donetsk, including Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.

Donetsk is one of four Ukrainian regions that Moscow declared annexed in September 2022. Kramatorsk and Sloviansk are important logistics support points for the Ukrainian military and home to many civilians who have not yet fled the fighting.

Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha described the attacks as "terrible" and "brutal," urging for "maximum pressure on Moscow." President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Sybiha have both demanded a full blockade of "Russia's war machine."

In unsuccessful talks about a ceasefire and the end of the war, Moscow demands that Ukraine cede Donetsk and the three other partially Russian-occupied regions to Russia completely. Ukraine rejects this as completely unacceptable.

As of late July 2025, Russia controls approximately 18.9% of Ukraine, with recent territorial gains mainly in eastern and southern regions. Estimated casualties are high, with figures ranging from 600,000 to over 1,000,000 killed or injured on the Russian side. The U.K. Defense Ministry estimated about 250,000 Russians killed to date, with NATO also acknowledging 100,000 Russian deaths in 2025 alone.

Diplomatic responses have included U.S. President Donald Trump imposing a deadline for Putin to negotiate peace by August 9, 2025, coupled with threats of stiff penalties and NATO weapon support to Ukraine. However, Russian leadership appears unmoved publicly, with Putin reportedly intending to continue the war. Kremlin officials continue framing the conflict as a geopolitical struggle against the West to maintain domestic support.

Rescue workers are currently searching for survivors among the rubble of a damaged nine-story residential building in Kyiv, which was reportedly hit by a rocket attack. A total of 135 people were injured in these and other attacks in Kyiv.

President Zelenskyy accused Moscow of deliberately causing deaths and trying to destabilize neighboring countries. The main target of the attacks was the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. The Ukrainian air force managed to shoot down 288 drones and three cruise missiles.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine remains intense, with ongoing Russian offensives and significant missile and drone attacks, including on Kyiv. The situation highlights the need for diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful solution and end the violence.
