Ukraine War: Last Night's Chaos in Kyiv

The city of Kyiv was shaken to its core last night: At least 14 deaths took place, with over 110 injured reported following a heavy overnight Russian attack. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy didn't mince words when he named other targeted locations — Odessa, Saporizhzhia, Chernihiv, Kirovohrad, and Mykolaiv. The Russian army deployed over 440 combat drones and 32 missiles against Ukraine, Zelenskyy wrote on Twitter.

"This is nothing more than terror," the Ukrainian president exclaimed. "The world, especially the USA and Europe, must step up and react like civilized societies against these terrorists." Vladimir Putin, Kremlin chief, was accused of waging war because he's able to afford to continue it.

Moscow's version of events

The Russian military spoke of a "strike with air-, land-, and sea-based precision weapons and unmanned aerial vehicles." Their statement claimed to have targeted armament plants in Kyiv and Saporizhzhia. They proudly announced the completion of their mission, stating that all designated objects had been destroyed.

Yet, a nine-story residential building in Kyiv was evidently hit by a Kh-101 cruise missile, as reported by Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.

Trump meeting postponed

The pressing international situation has placed Ukraine in an uneasy state. Zelenskyy was to meet with US President Donald Trump today at the G7 summit in Canada. They were set to discuss further sanctions against Moscow and potential arms purchases. However, Trump already left the gathering of the world's most significant democratic industrial nations. Efforts by Trump to end the war have largely failed, as Europe and the USA are yet to finalize new sanctions. The ongoing conflict between Israel and potential nuclear power Iran swiftly seized the attention of international politics.

Putin pushes forward despite sanctions, using the St. Petersburg Economic Forum as an opportunity to show that he's not isolated, circumventing sanctions. "It's unacceptable for the powerful of this world to turn a blind eye," Zelenskyy protested. "The aggressors must feel the pain, not the innocent, peace-loving people."

A nine-hour air raid

The air raid in Kyiv persisted almost nine hours, with reporters reporting sounds of drones, missiles, and numerous explosions. Fires were reported at 27 locations. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko also reported fires, with over 40 apartments in a high-rise destroyed. The search for survivors continues, with approximately 4 to 14 people still unaccounted for. As of noon, at least 114 injuries were reported, with 68 hospitalized. Power outages were reported as well. Kyiv has declared Wednesday as a day of mourning.

A 62-year-old American in Kyiv reportedly died during the attack. However, doctors determined the death to be natural.

Defense issues and counter-attacks

Kyiv is reportedly better equipped to handle air attacks compared to other cities in the country. Nonetheless, the capital has been repeatedly targeted by heavy drone or missile attacks. The Black Sea port city of Odessa and other regions were also under attack with one death and 13 injured reported.

Due to Russia's increased production of combat drones of Iranian design, nighttime attacks involving hundreds of aircraft are no longer uncommon. Last week, the Russian army used nearly 500 combat drones or drone decoys in one night. These distraction attempts aim to overwhelm air defense systems.

Ukraine retaliated by targeting Russia with drones during their defensive struggle. Airports, including four in Moscow, temporarily restricted air traffic.

Successful Interceptions

Of the 440 Russian combat drones launched that night, 239 were shot down, according to the Ukrainian air force. A further 169 drones were electronically disabled or lost. Two hypersonic Kinzhal missiles were also successfully intercepted. Of the 16 cruise missiles Ch-101, 15 were shot down, along with all cruise missiles of the types Ch-59/69. Yet, four Kalibr cruise missiles launched from the Black Sea managed to find their targets. "The main target of the attack was the city of Kyiv," it was stated. The military reports are not fully verifiable but do illustrate the scale of the air attacks.
