Russian Advance in Sumy Region Halted: Ukraine Update
Get the latest updates on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as the Russian advance in the northeastern region of Sumy comes to a grinding halt.
The Ukrainian military has declared victory in halting the Russian offensive in the Sumy region. Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Olexander Syrskyj, made the announcement via Telegram, stating, "The progression of Russian troops in the border area of the Sumy region has been halted - as of now - and the combat contact line has been fortified." He further emphasized that Ukrainian units have already partially recaptured some occupied territory.
Russian forces, after seizing control of the border region of Kursk, have been making their way into neighboring Sumy. The region is a key focus of the Russian summer offensive, with significant troop buildups.
The city of Sumy remains 20 kilometers out of reach for the Russian troops, according to reports. However, military experts predict that the Russian advance has stagnated. The Institute for the Study of War reported in a recent analysis that Russian forces did not advance in the Sumy region on June 23. Syrskyj has revealed plans to further strengthen fortifications in the area and form a special group to improve coordination with local authorities.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested the formation of a buffer zone in neighboring Ukraine and hinted at capturing the regional capital, Sumy. Putin's comments, made during the International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg, shed light on his potential goal to occupy Ukraine in its entirety. He referred to Russians and Ukrainians as one people, stating, "In that sense, the whole of Ukraine is ours."
