Mali Head Coach Tom Saintfiet Shares His Thoughts on Russians Ahead of Friendly Against Russia

Russia vs. Mali friendly aims to bridge cultures ahead of key challenges

Ahead of the match against Russia, Mali national team head coach Tom Saintfiet spoke about his impressions of Russians, dismissing the stereotype that they are closed-off people. According to the coach, such perceptions often stem from language barriers and cultural differences rather than the actual character of the people themselves.

Saintfiet recalled his time managing a club in the Faroe Islands, where he worked with a Russian player named Igor, whom he remembered fondly. He also noted that in many northern countries—including Scandinavia and Finland—people tend to be more reserved and maintain distance in communication.

"I've heard stories from Nicolas Lombaerts—he genuinely fell in love with St. Petersburg," Saintfiet told SE.

The Mali coach added that much depends on how long someone spends in a foreign country. In his view, a short visit may not foster a deep connection with the place or its people, but long-term living and working there usually leads to understanding and friendships. On March 31, Russia will face Mali in a BetBoom friendly match in St. Petersburg.
