Russia views Putin and Trump as indispensable figures.
Russian Leadership Eyes Potential Putin-Trump Meeting in the Future, With No Plans for May 2022
(Moscow, Reuters) - Russian officials have voiced a strong interest in a future meeting between President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, but have left the possibility of an encounter in mid-May 2025 in the Middle East up in the air.
Trump hinted at a potential meeting during his planned trip to Saudi Arabia this month. When asked about this, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Monday that Putin currently has no plans to travel to Saudi Arabia, but a meeting with Trump is indeed being considered. "And in many ways, we deem it necessary," Peskov asserted. "It requires appropriate preparation and calls for dedicated efforts on various expert levels," he added, stressing the importance of ongoing contacts between Moscow and Washington[1][3].
However, Peskov clarified that there is still no firm agreement or schedule for this potential meeting. In fact, there hasn't been a face-to-face meeting between Putin and a sitting US president since the summit with Trump's predecessor, Joe Biden, in Geneva in June 2021[2]. During that summit, escalating tensions surrounding Russia's invasion of Ukraine led to international sanctions against Russia.
Trump's Middle East visit in May 2025 will include stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates[4]. Although both sides recognize the significance of a meeting, Putin does not plan on traveling to the Middle East during this trip[5]. Trump and Putin have had several phone conversations this year. Over the weekend, Trump announced that he and his advisors have held fruitful discussions about Russia and Ukraine recently[4].
Interestingly, environmental groups have expressed concerns about increasing LNG (liquefied natural gas) exports from Russia[6]. Senator Marco Rubio, however, suggests that Russia and Ukraine are still apart in resolving their ongoing disagreements[7].
Overall, while the possibility of a Putin-Trump meeting in May 2025 is being discussed, no specific plans have been finalized. If Trump's visit to the Middle East later this year yields a potential meeting, we will certainly keep you updated!
