Russia to experience accelerated delivery of S-400 missile systems from India's request.
India to Receive Remaining S-400 Air Defense Systems from Russia by 2026
India is set to receive the final two regiments of the S-400 air defense system from Russia by 2026, according to recent reports. Deliveries are scheduled for February and August 2026, completing the initial deal signed in 2018 for a total of $5.43 billion.
The S-400 system, locally known as "Sudarshan Chakra," has already proven integral to India’s air defense, particularly during Operation Sindoor in 2025. During this operation, the system effectively intercepted drones and missiles launched by adversaries.
The first three regiments were delivered between December 2021 and October 2023 and are currently operational along India's borders with Pakistan and China. These systems have protected 15 Indian cities from missile attacks and played a crucial role during the conflict with Pakistan in May this year.
India is considering purchasing additional S-400 squadrons to further strengthen its air defense capabilities. There is even talk of possibly acquiring the more advanced S-500 systems from Russia as well.
In addition, India is planning to set up a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility for the S-400 in collaboration with Russia. This facility could support both current and future systems.
The Indian delegation, led by the National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, is currently in Moscow. During this visit, Mr. Doval plans to discuss the acceleration of deliveries of the remaining S-400 air defense systems and service solutions for their maintenance.
The S-400 "Triumf" air defense system, which has been in service with the Russian army since 2007, is a powerful asset in air defense operations. Each battery of the S-400 system usually consists of between four and eight launchers. The system's radar and missiles allow it to engage multiple targets at a significant distance, and it can track and engage up to ten targets simultaneously, including aircraft, missiles, and large drones.
Deliveries began in 2021, and three regiments (24 launchers and 6,000 missiles) have been supplied so far. The S-400 system's radar has a detection range of up to 400 km, making it a formidable air defense system.
The main focus of the visit, however, is the continuation of Russian oil purchases amidst US pressure. The S-400 systems, with their proven capabilities, are undoubtedly a valuable asset in India's quest for enhanced air defense.
- In light of the ongoing discussions, India may further strengthen its air defense capabilities with the acquisition of additional S-400 squadrons and the possible procurement of the advanced S-500 systems, which are under consideration.
- Amidst growing concerns about war-and-conflicts and general-news, the political significance of India's continued purchases of Russian oil, concurrent with the deliveries of S-400 air defense systems, has become a matter of global politics, as observed in the ongoing visit of the Indian delegation to Moscow.
