Russia suffers minor setbacks in Sumy region's territory claim before Trump-Putin meeting

In the lead-up to the scheduled peace talks between the US and Russian leaders on Friday, the eastern region of Sumy Oblast in Ukraine remains a hotbed of conflict.

Russian forces have been pushing westward in this region for months, making daily advances in areas such as the Donetsk region. However, in the Sumy region, the progress has been more limited. According to recent reports, Russian troops are attacking near several villages north and northeast of Sumy city, including Novokostyantynivka, Kindrativka, Yunakivka, and Sadky. Some locations are described as contested or "gray zones" where control is unclear.

Ukrainian forces, on the other hand, have been mounting counteroffensives. They have successfully reclaimed Bezsalivka from Russian control by early August and have also regained the villages of Stepne and Novokostiantynivka. The General Staff of Ukraine reported these gains in a Tuesday evening report, with the details of the active operations being conducted by Ukrainian forces in the Sumy direction not fully detailed.

The top commander of Ukrainian forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, announced that they are holding back the enemy and conducting active operations in the Sumy direction. He made this statement on Facebook, adding that they are holding the line in this critical region.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has not made any recent statements regarding the war in Ukraine or the peace talks. His comments earlier in the week, however, suggested that a potential solution to the conflict might involve both Kyiv and Moscow ceding land.

It's important to note that the war in Ukraine, initiated by Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, continues to be ongoing. Russian forces control a total of about 114,000 square kilometers (44,000 sq miles) in Ukraine, as per the Deep State online map project. In the Sumy region, they control about 200 sq km (77 sq miles), according to the same project.

As the peace talks between the US and Russia approach, the situation in the eastern Sumy region remains dynamic, with both sides engaging in continuous conflict. While Russia is attempting limited advances, Ukraine is mounting counteroffensives. The front in eastern Sumy remains active but relatively static with frequent counterattacks and contested zones.
