Russia suffers drone bombings at oil facilities by Ukraine forces
In a series of targeted strikes, the Ukrainian military has been aiming to disrupt the fuel supply of the Russian military and make it more challenging for Moscow to finance the ongoing war. The attacks have been focused on oil facilities in Russia, with two major refineries in the regions of Wolgograd and Bashkortostan being the recent victims.
On the night of the latest attacks, the city of Wolgograd, with a population over a million, was targeted. The refinery in Wolgograd, one of the largest oil processing plants in Russia, has been damaged in previous attacks and also produces fuel for the Russian army, according to reports from Kyiv. The Ukrainian military claimed responsibility for the attack and preliminary information suggests the operation of the refinery has been halted.
Governor Andrei Bocharov reported minor damages to some residential buildings due to falling drone debris, but there were no casualties. The head of the region in Bashkortostan, Radi Khabirov, confirmed the attack in his region and stated that the fire at a chemical plant belonging to Gazprom, which was hit by two drones, is currently being extinguished. The extent of the damage is still being assessed, and there were no reported casualties in this attack either.
The Ukrainian army's special forces, reportedly units of the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces, have been conducting long-range strikes, often using drones and precision attacks on energy infrastructure. The Russian military intercepted 43 Ukrainian drones overnight, including nearly a dozen in the Volgograd region. Ukrainian media outlets reported drones of the SBU intelligence service attacking a key facility of a plant in Russia.
It is important to note that the scale of Ukraine's attacks is not comparable to the destruction Russia is causing in Ukraine with its war. The attacks from Kyiv are strategic and aimed at weakening Russia's ability to continue the conflict, rather than causing widespread civilian harm.
As the situation continues to develop, it is crucial that all parties prioritise the safety and well-being of civilians and work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
