Russia suffers drone attacks at oil refineries from Ukraine
In a series of unexpected events, oil facilities in two Russian regions, Volgograd and Bashkortostan, have been targeted by drone attacks. The attacks, aimed at disrupting the fuel supply of the Russian military and making it more difficult for Moscow to finance the war, have been reportedly carried out by the Ukrainian military.
The refinery in Volgograd, a million-strong city, was shelled during the night. This strategic facility, one of the largest oil processing plants in Russia, produces fuel for the Russian army. Preliminary information indicates that the work of the refinery has been halted following the attack. Governor Andrei Bocharov reported minor damages to some residential buildings due to falling drone debris.
In Bashkortostan, a chemical plant belonging to Gazprom in the city of Salavat was attacked by two drones in the morning. The head of the region, Radi Khabirov, confirmed the attack and reported that a fire is currently being extinguished. Fortunately, no deaths or injuries have been reported in the attack on the chemical plant in Bashkortostan.
The name of the person who coordinated the attack on the chemical factory in Salavat, Bashkortostan, has not been publicly disclosed. Similarly, the claims about the attacks cannot be independently verified. Ukrainian media outlets reported that drones of the SBU intelligence service attacked a 'key facility' of the plant in Bashkortostan.
All emergency services are on site to address the situation in Bashkortostan. In Volgograd, the Russian military intercepted 43 Ukrainian drones overnight, including nearly a dozen in the Volgograd region.
It's important to note that the scale of Ukraine's attacks on Russian oil facilities is not comparable to the destruction Russia is causing with its war in Ukraine. The attacks on the refineries in Volgograd and Bashkortostan were reportedly carried out as a reason for the attacks from Kyiv.
The extent of the damage to the chemical plant in Bashkortostan is still being assessed. The Ukrainian military claims a hit in the local refinery in Volgograd. However, the full impact of these attacks on Russia's fuel supply and war financing remains to be seen.
