Russia stepped up efforts to rapidly increase its drone manufacturing capacity

Russia continues to intensify its drone warfare in Ukraine, with reports suggesting that the country is on track to produce up to 40,000 Shahed/Geran-2 combat drones and 24,000 decoy drones this year. This strategic focus on overwhelming Ukraine's air defenses through sheer volume and technological upgrades, including AI-enabled autonomous drones and larger warheads, has been documented by various intelligence sources and analysts.

In a significant development, Russia targeted a key bridge in the Ukrainian city of Kherson, calling on residents to evacuate. This comes after a Russian missile strike on Mykolaiv resulted in at least seven injuries and the destruction or damage of dozens of civilian infrastructure buildings.

Meanwhile, Ukraine and Western allies are also scaling up drone production and delivery, aiming to counterbalance Russia's growing drone offensive. In May 2025 alone, Russia launched 3,835 drones, with high interception rates by Ukraine, but continuing heavy drone barrage operations. Notably, Russia launched a record 6,129 Shahed drones against Ukraine in July, surpassing the previous record of 5,337 drones in June.

On the diplomatic front, the USA has been escalating its criticism of India for continuing to finance Russia's war in Ukraine through purchases of Russian oil. In response, Russia has been observed constructing new infrastructure on the territory of the occupied Donetsk airport in eastern Ukraine for their massive drone attacks.

Elsewhere, Armenia will conduct joint military exercises with the United States under the name "Eagle Partner 2025" from August 12 to 20. Similarly, NATO is considering the possibility of stationing a German-Dutch command of the Allied Forces in Estonia.

In other news, Moldova has had three pro-Russian political parties banned from the crucial parliamentary elections in September by its election commission. Germany must prepare for crises and disasters, according to DRK President Gerda Hasselfeldt, who sees "enormous deficits" in all areas of civil protection.

On a positive note, Ukraine and Russia are organizing a prisoner exchange of 1,200 prisoners of war each. The trial against the suspected perpetrators of the attack on a concert hall in Moscow with 149 fatalities began on Monday.

Unfortunately, the conflict has not been without civilian casualties. A woman was injured in a Ukrainian drone strike on Voronezh, Russia, and more than 120 firefighters are battling a blaze at an oil depot in Sochi, Russia, after a Ukrainian drone strike.

In leadership changes, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the appointment of Lieutenant General Anatoly Kryvonos as the new commander of the Ukrainian Air Force.
