Over 6,000 Ukrainian war casualties are set for return by Russia, however, the transfer is hindered as Moscow holds onto the remains, awaiting their delivery.

Russia stands ready to reclaim 1,212 deceased Ukrainian nationals.

Buzzing Borders: The Ongoing Saga of Body Repatriation and Prisoner Exchanges

In the heart of Russian bustle, trucks loaded with refrigerated remains of fallen soldiers unyieldingly wait by the border with Ukraine, as per Russian officials' statements. Alexander Sorin, a representative of the Russian Ministry of Defense, shares that they're prepared to transport over 6,000 bodies – both by road and rail – once a green light is given.

Yesterday, Sorin released a video on the Ministry’s Telegram channel, showcasing the trucks adorned with refrigeration units. Inside, white-bag-clad remains – allegedly those of Ukrainian soldiers – can be seen.

Kiev's Calm Response

Ukraine, on the other hand, wants to avoid any pressure from Moscow. Kirill Budanov, head of the military intelligence service GUR, voiced his thoughts on Telegram: “The decisión to hand over the bodies shouldn't be in the hands of just one person. We're witnessing cynical attempts by some Russian propagandists to exploit human suffering."

The agreed-upon repatriation action is scheduled to commence soon, as announced in Istanbul. According to Budanov, everything is proceeding as planned, "despite the distortionary information games of the enemy."

Coordination Woes and 'Sleazy Stunts'

The Ukrainian coordination staff criticized Russia for setting a unilateral timeframe for the handover of the bodies, with no precise appointment scheduled. They assert that all deceased soldiers will be returned home. The staff also accused Russia of playing ‘dirty games’ and urged the Russian side to resume constructive work.

Public Tally from the Russian Side

Yevgeny Balitsky, the occupation commander in the Russian-controlled area of the Ukrainian region of Saporizhzhia, published the personal details and locations of death for the fallen soldiers on his Telegram channel. Many of these soldiers, it seems, perished in the Russian region of Kursk, where Ukraine reported heavy losses of troops during the recapture in August 2024.

The Next Phase - Prisoner Exchange and Body Repatriation

The body repatriation and a new prisoner exchange involving 1,200 prisoners on each side were agreed upon on June 2, 2025, during direct Kiev-Moscow negotiations in Istanbul. However, the date for the prisoner exchange, initially expected this weekend, remains unclear.

In a broader agreement, both nations agreed to swap wounded troops and captured soldiers under the age of 25, apart from the repatriation of bodies. With Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky confirming further exchanges, this humanitarian effort amidst ongoing conflict carries on, complicated by broader diplomatic tensions.
