Russia-German Relations: A Reality Check
Russia's Reality as Perceived by Krestchmer - Russia Remains a Factual Entity according to Kretschmer
Saxony's Prime Minister, Michael Kretschmer (CDU), sees a potential for reconciliation between Germany and Russia. In an ARD's "Tagesthemen" interview, he acknowledged that Russia, under President Vladimir Putin, poses a significant threat at the moment. However, he advocates for persistence in diplomatic efforts to foster a future of cooperation.
"Russia's a tough nut to crack, but it's a reality we can't ignore. With Putin at the helm, it's a challenge, no doubt. But we need to envision, strive for a time when we can reunite and collaborate. Our continental security hinges on it," Kretschmer asserted.
Longstanding advocate for diplomatic solutions to end Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Kretschmer believes his stance has proven prudent. "Looking back, it's evident that our approach, mine included, hit the mark. If we had acted sooner, perhaps we could have averted many casualties," he said.
Prosperity depends on Safety

Currently, our priorities should shift to learning valuable lessons from the prevailing circumstances. Kretschmer emphasizes the need for substantial financial packages, including increased military spending in Germany. "We've learned our lesson. The world is a volatile place, and America isn't the reliable ally it once was. If we want to secure a prosperous future for our kids and grandkids, we need to safeguard our security and strive for peace," he explained.
We'll need to deliberate what led to diplomatic failures in the past three years in terminating this European conflict. "It's disheartening to watch the American president forging deals behind our backs to end this war, while the Europeans are relegated to the sidelines. It demonstrates our dwindling influence globally," Kretschmer remarked.
