A 30-Day Truce Proposed as Pressure mounts on Putin Amid the Ukraine Conflict

Russia receives proposal for 30-day truce from Ukraine to halt military operations

Let's dive into the latest updates from Kyiv! After a phone call with President Trump, Vladimir Putin's shoulders seem to be bearing the heat as Ukraine proposes a 30-day ceasefire, backed by Merz, Macron, Tusk, and Starmer.

Ukraine, in a bold move alongside its European allies, is calling on Russia to agree to a 30-day unconditional ceasefire commencing Monday. Andrij Sybiha, Ukraine's Foreign Minister, announced the offer via a live broadcast on X platform, hinting at a potential opening for peace talks.

The Europe-Ukraine trio, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, descended upon Kyiv during the night. They held a high-level meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, exchanging ideas on how to handle the escalating war in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy and his esteemed European guests also hopped onto a conference call with President Trump, discussing peace initiatives for Ukraine during their meetup. This joint conversation revolved around pacifying the ongoing chaos in Ukraine.

Back in March, France and Britain set up a "coalition of the willing," with about 30 countries (including Germany), debating potential European contributions for a ceasefire and peacekeeping operations in Ukraine.

Politics and Solidarity in Kyiv

Eyeing tougher sanctions, the EU shows no signs of backing down. The European leaders' collective visit to Kyiv aims to convey a strong message of solidarity towards Ukraine. Having previously stated their demands for an unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine, the four European heads of state and government made the call for a 30-day cessation of hostilities the day before their visit. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed this demand on the following day.

However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov expressed Russia's ceasefire agreement hinged on a halt to Western arm deliveries to Ukraine. As Peskov stated in a TV interview, without a halt to these arms supplies, a ceasefire, particularly at a time when Russian troops are on a charge, would primarily benefit Ukraine.

As things stand, while Ukraine and its allies, along with President Trump, put forth the idea of a 30-day truce, Russia remains staunchly unconvinced and has yet to agree to these terms. Previous ceasefires, too, have seen their fair share of violations, fueling the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
