Ukraine Under Fire Again: Kyiv Hit by Drone Attacks, Russia Stands Firm on Attacks Against Ukraine

Russia rampages its military assault on Ukraine once more

In a sudden turn of events, the capital Kyiv and several other regions including Odessa, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk have reported increased air alerts and intensified drone attacks, marking the first such occurrence since Russia announced a three-day ceasefire. The disturbing news emerged late night and continued into the morning, with no info available yet on damages or casualties. In response, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged citizens to head for shelter in bunkers.

The ceasefire declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin for the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II came to an end at midnight (23:00 CET). While Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and key European allies advocated for a 30-day ceasefire starting May 8, Russia has stayed unmoved in its stance.

Western supporters of Ukraine threatened new sanctions against Russia if Moscow rejected the ceasefire proposal. In response, the Kremlin showed its unwavering resolve, indicating that they won't bow down to any pressure.

A Venue for Peace Talks: Istanbul Proposed?

Responding to the calls for peace, Putin pitched the idea of direct negotiations with Ukraine over a resolution to the conflict if a ceasefire is agreed upon. He suggested the bustling city of Istanbul as the venue for these talks, set to take place on May 15, with negotiations picking up where they left off prior to the war. However, Ukraine has yet to respond to this proposal.

Putin stated that Russia is open for negotiations without any preconditions. "The decision now lies with the Ukrainians and their patrons, such as the EU and the US. Those who genuinely desire peace cannot help but support it," he added.

Interestingly, Ukraine and its Western allies seek a ceasefire to foster peaceful negotiations, while Russia insists on ending the hostilities only after a negotiated settlement is reached.

While digging deeper into the history of the conflict, search results unveiled that Ukraine launched a massive drone attack on Russia on May 6 and early May 7, 2025, which was the biggest since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine[1]. However, no recent proposals for a resolution to the conflict could be found.
