- Russia Poisoning Allegation: Wife Claims Navalny Veteran Politician was Poisoned on Russian Soil
Alexei Navalny, a prominent critic of Vladimir Putin in Russia, survived a poisoning attack using the nerve agent Novichok in August 2020. The poisoning occurred in Russia, and Navalny was later treated in the Berlin Charité after being transferred on Julia's request.
Two independent labs examined smuggled biological samples from Navalny, and the laboratory tests confirmed he was poisoned with a nerve agent. The detailed results of the examinations, including the type of poison used, were not disclosed by Julia.
Initially, Russian authorities charged Navalny with violating parole from an earlier case. However, his arrest immediately after his return to Russia in January 2021 raised suspicions of a connection between his poisoning and his detainment.
Julia criticized Western politicians for delaying the publication of the results of the lab examinations "for political reasons." She also called for the release of the lab reports and the labs' conclusions that Navalny was murdered and specifically poisoned.
Despite the Russian authorities officially attributing Navalny's death to natural causes, critics believe he was deliberately killed. The Russian justice system initiated more cases against Navalny, including one for extremism, and sentenced him to a long prison term.
Julia had the lab examinations commissioned and the samples sent abroad for analysis. She also advocated for the release of the lab reports and the investigation into the location of the lab examinations, which remains unclear.
Navalny died in a prison north of the Arctic Circle in February 2024, leaving behind a legacy as a fierce critic of the Russian government and a symbol of resistance against corruption and authoritarianism in Russia.
