In a significant development, President Donald Trump has issued an ultimatum to Russia, giving them 10-12 days to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. If Russia fails to do so, the U.S. plans to impose a series of economic measures aimed at increasing pressure on Moscow.

The Sanctioning Russia Act of 2025, a Senate bill with broad support, outlines these measures. They include tariffs of at least 500% on all imports from Russia, sanctions on Russian banks, a prohibition on imports of Russian uranium, tariffs of at least 500% on any country importing Russian fossil fuels, and secondary sanctions and tariffs targeting Russia’s economic partners.

The drastic tariff measure aims to severely restrict Russian exports to the U.S., while the banking restrictions and energy sector sanctions would cut off significant revenue sources for Russia. The secondary sanctions are designed to discourage countries and entities from continuing trade or cooperation with Russia.

President Trump has expressed disappointment in Putin's actions and has shortened the ultimatum to 50 days from the initial 50-day period announced earlier. However, Trump has stated that he doesn't want to impose sanctions because he "loves the Russian people."

Russian officials have downplayed the impact of these potential sanctions, stating they have lived under heavy sanctions for a long time. Medvedev, a high-ranking Russian official, has threatened the U.S. with war after Trump shortened the ultimatum to Putin.

There is a possibility that Trump and Putin could meet in China if they "happen to be in the same city." However, Trump has expressed no interest in a personal meeting with Putin. President Trump has also stated that Putin and Zelensky will definitely meet.

The Kremlin has taken note of Trump's statement, as reported by Putin's press secretary, Dmitry Peskov. As of the latest statement, Peskov continues to refer to the war as a "special military operation." Despite considering Trump's words, Russia has not indicated any intention to end the war.

Given the current minimal trade between the U.S. and Russia, these measures could primarily impact Russia's other partners. The White House later clarified that this refers to a 100% tariff on Russian imports and "secondary sanctions" against countries that continue to buy Russian oil.
