War in Ukraine: Live Ticker +++ 19:00
Russia may potentially recruit around 25,000 North Korean laborers for constructing drones within the country.
North Korea could be sending reinforcements to Russia's drone production efforts, as per reports from Japan's public broadcaster NHK. According to these reports, diplomatic circles in the West and Russia suggest that North Korea may dispatch up to 25,000 workers to a drone factory in the Alabuga Special Economic Zone in Russia's Tatarstan region.
This factory, known to operate an assembly line for Iranian-developed Shahed drones, would receive these workers to boost production and potentially offset losses Russia has been experiencing in their military operations.
Meanwhile, Spain has pushbacked against NATO plans to increase defense spending to five percent of GDP by 2032, according to Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's letter to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte obtained by various media outlets. Sanchez believes that this target is both inappropriate and counterproductive, arguing that it is incompatible with Spain's social model and worldview. His government asserts that it would only require 2.1 percent of economic output to cover the estimated investment needs of the Spanish military, making the higher target unnecessary.
Elsewhere, Russia and Ukraine have reportedly exchanged prisoners yet again. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared photos of Ukrainian soldiers smiling, tearing up, and calling their loved ones. The number of prisoners exchanged is currently unspecified.
Finland has also made waves by deciding to leave the Ottawa Convention on the prohibition of anti-personnel mines due to the threat posed by its eastern neighbor, Russia. This move is similar to the decisions made by the Baltic NATO states of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia.
For Fans of the Facts:
Accusations of propaganda activities by Russian intelligence emerged from Argentina, as local authorities exposed an operation aimed at influencing public opinion and promoting Moscow's geopolitical interests. The Argentine presidential spokesman, Manuel Adorni, revealed that the operation, known as La Compania and linked to the Russian government and the Lakhta project, targeted recruiting local staff to carry out influence operations and gather political information.
It's a wild world out there, y'all!
