Russia Lost a High-Ranking Military Officer in Conflict Due to Ukrainian Actions

In a shocking turn of events, Guards Maj. Gen. Mikhail Gudkov, the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, was reportedly killed in a missile strike in Russia's Kursk region, close to the Ukrainian border, on July 2, 2025.

Oleg Kozhemyako, the governor of Russia's Primorsky region, confirmed Gudkov's death, stating that he perished while performing his duties as an officer. Kozhemyako, who had previously handed Gudkov awards for bravery, described him as a "strong-willed warrior."

Russian telegram channels and veteran groups reported that a precision HIMARS missile strike by Ukrainian forces killed Gudkov along with other senior officers. However, as of the latest information available, there has been no direct official statement from Ukrainian authorities explicitly confirming or denying their involvement in the strike.

Prior to his appointment as the deputy chief of the Russian Navy for coastal and ground forces by President Vladimir Putin in March, Gudkov led a brigade that fought in Ukraine. His brigade, the 155th, has been accused by the Ukrainian military of committing war crimes, including the killing of civilians in the towns of Bucha, Irpin, and Gostomel during the early months of Russia's war.

However, Russia has consistently denied committing war crimes in Ukraine, despite evidence gathered by the Ukrainians and international investigators. President Putin, in a statement, praised Gudkov's experience, stating that it was valuable and needed to be replicated in other units, leading to his promotion.

As of now, Ukraine has not officially confirmed or denied involvement in Gudkov's death. The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine has previously made similar accusations against the 155th brigade, claiming that it was involved in executions of Ukrainian prisoners of war. This latest incident is likely to escalate tensions between the two nations further.
