Russia Launches Strict Verification for Animal Shelters to Boost Adoptions
Russia has introduced a new verification system for animal shelters, charities, and veterinary clinics. The initiative aims to improve conditions for animals and build trust in the adoption process. Tech platform Avito led the project, working alongside charitable groups like Nika, Vernost (Loyalty), and Dogs That Love.
The system was proposed by Antonina Yedunova, who sought to create stricter standards for organisations caring for animals. To pass verification, shelters must meet key requirements: housing at least 10 animals, keeping up-to-date veterinary records, ensuring vaccinations and sterilisation, and providing suitable living conditions.
The verification system is now active, with shelters and clinics undergoing checks. Approved organisations will be listed on Avito’s platform, making it easier for potential adopters to find trustworthy sources. The long-term effect should be fewer abandoned pets and more successful adoptions.
