Russia Launches Attacks on Energy Infrastructure in Ukraine: Damaging Critical Infrastructure and Causing Power Outages Across the Country
Overnight, the city of Kremenchuk in Poltava, Ukraine, bore the brunt of a relentless attack by Russian forces, primarily targeting crucial energy infrastructure and residential areas. Reports indicate around 50 powerful explosions, with smoke and devastation evident across the city. One person sustained moderate injuries, but there were no reported fatalities.
The Wake of Destruction
The attack commenced shortly after midnight, with the first blasts heard around 00:30 and continued until about 2:00 a.m. The air raid alarm in Poltava persisted for approximately seven hours, causing alarm among residents. The Russian military unleashed a flurry of drones (272) and missiles (8), including 2 hypersonic aeroballistic Kh-47M2 Kinzhal missiles, 4 cruise Kalibr missiles, and 2 cruise Iskander-K missiles.
Ukrainian air defense systems managed to intercept a majority of the incoming attacks, destroying 140 drones, three Iskander missiles, one Kinzhal missile, and one Kalibr missile. However, some weapons and their debris still reached Kremenchuk, causing substantial damage.
Crumbling Urban Landscape
Residential neighborhoods and civilian facilities like homes, apartment buildings, vehicles, and power lines were not spared, with extensive damage reported. Fires broke out overnight, but emergency services managed to contain them by morning. Most notably, critical energy and agricultural facilities in the Kremenchuk community suffered direct hits and debris impacts, making a swift recovery difficult.
Cluster munitions were used, posing serious risks to civilians due to their toy-like appearance and potential leftover unexploded submunitions.
The Unending Assault on Kremenchuk
The attack on June 20-21, 2025, followed a similar massive assault just days prior on June 15, 2025, targeting energy and agricultural infrastructure with missile and drone attacks. This latest round of violence underscores the ongoing conflict in the region, where peace remains elusive.
