Russia is insufficiently powerful for a significant military campaign

In the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the situation remains critical, particularly in the Donetsk region. According to Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksiy Syrsky, the front sections of Pokrovsk, Dobropillia, and the border with the Dnipropetrovsk region in Nowopawliwka are under intense pressure.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Russia has prepared offensive operations along four main axes this year: Sumy, Nowopawliwka, Pokrovsk, and Saporizhzhia. However, Zelensky claims that the operation in Sumy has already failed, with Russia suffering heavy losses, particularly in personnel. The Ukrainian military has inflicted even greater losses on Russia in the Sumy region.

To bolster its defense, Ukraine is expecting the imminent delivery of missiles for the Patriot and Himars air defense systems. These missiles are being procured in the US and will be delivered through the NATO mechanism PURL ("Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List").

The first two packages, each worth 500 million US dollars, will also include missiles for Patriot and Himars systems. The United States is expected to deliver the Patriot air defense systems, with financing from the European Union. President Trump announced this delivery on July 11, 2025, and longer-range missiles are planned to be part of the American weapon deliveries.

Ukraine has already received over two billion US dollars from its partners through the PURL mechanism. In October, Ukraine expects further funds, bringing the total amount to around 3.6 billion US dollars.

Expert opinions suggest that the losses reported by both sides in the war may be underestimated. Both sides rarely disclose their own losses in the war, with any mentioned numbers often considered too low by experts.

It is important to note that Zelensky's claims about Russia's inability to launch a major offensive cannot be independently verified at this time.

The war between Ukraine and Russia has been ongoing for several years, with no clear end in sight. Despite the challenges, Ukraine continues to seek support from its international partners to strengthen its defense and protect its sovereignty.
