Russia handed over 1,000 corpses to Ukraine, as stated by Kiev.
In a rare instance of cooperation during the ongoing conflict, Ukraine and Russia have exchanged the remains of fallen soldiers, as confirmed by Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
Last week, Ukraine received 1,000 bodies, claimed by Russia to be of fallen Ukrainian soldiers. In a reciprocal move, Ukraine returned the bodies of 24 Russian soldiers. The mediation of this exchange was carried out by the ICRC, based on its mandate to facilitate humanitarian aid and communication between parties in conflict.
The exchange of soldiers' bodies and the release of prisoners of war (POWs) are the only known areas of cooperation between the two nations since the war began. No new areas of cooperation have been reported beyond these efforts.
The Kremlin recently announced that peace talks between Russia and Ukraine were on 'pause', adding to the concerns of international observers. Despite a US-led push for diplomatic efforts and three rounds of direct talks between Kiev and Moscow, progress towards stopping the fighting appears to have stalled.
Meanwhile, the exact number of casualties from either side has not been regularly published since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. However, it is estimated that tens of thousands of soldiers have been killed on both sides during the conflict.
