The German government has expressed concerns about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, stating that there is no clear indication that Russian President Vladimir Putin is currently engaging constructively in a peace process for Ukraine.

In a statement made on Wednesday in Berlin, German government spokesman Steffen Meyer said, "There is no clear indication that President Putin is moving towards a peace process for Ukraine." Meyer's statement comes in response to a query from the dts news agency and is understood in the context of statements made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz after the summit in Washington on Monday.

Meyer's statement follows recent developments in Ukraine, where significant steps have been taken by US President Donald Trump and the Europeans towards peace. However, the German government sees no signs that Putin is moving towards a peace process for Ukraine.

The German government's suggestion of a peace process contrasts with the reality on the ground, as NATO officials describe Putin as "stalling" peace talks, which effectively allows Russia to continue military actions in Ukraine. Although there have been diplomatic exchanges, including a summit between Putin and former U.S. President Trump where some negotiation terms were discussed, no substantive ceasefire or peace agreement has been achieved.

Ukrainian and European backers insist that no terms can be agreed upon while fighting continues actively. Meyer expressed that it is important for the meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to take place, as it is the logical next step to move the peace process forward.

Meyer did not mention any specific steps taken by Putin or Zelensky towards the peace process. However, he emphasised that Putin must deliver and show a serious interest in a peace settlement. The aim of the peace process, as stated earlier, is to make it a success for Ukraine and for European security.
