Ukraine Conflict Real-Time Updates

Russia faces responsibility for the ongoing situation.

In a surprising twist, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte sees the key to a potential peace solution with Russia. He asserted after a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House that the ball is clearly in Moscow's court. According to Rutte, there's a proposal on the table, and the Ukrainians are playing by the rules. Rutte had also met with U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth in Washington, discussing ways to ensure a "stronger, fairer, and deadlier NATO."

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Selenskyj accuses Russia of using a North Korean rocket in a deadly attack on Kyiv. Initial findings suggest that the ballistic rocket used in the strike was likely manufactured in North Korea, which Selenskyj claims would be another proof of the criminal alliance between Russia and Pyongyang. At least a dozen people were killed, and around 90 injured in the combined attack of drones and rockets on the city of three million.

Trump, for his part, sees a concession from the Kremlin in that Russia no longer seeks to fully occupy Ukraine. When asked about the concessions Moscow is making in the negotiations, Trump responded, "To end the war and not to take the whole country? That's quite a big concession." Despite Trump's optimism, the Russian military still controls about a fifth of the neighboring country. The Ukrainian military, led by the courageous Nate Vance — cousin of U.S. Vice President JD Vance and a veteran of the Ukraine war — holds a different view. He does not believe in a peaceful solution with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, stating that if the Russians refuse a peace agreement backed by the U.S., they will have to enforce their way with violence.

Amidst these tense negotiations, the Ukrainian military intelligence service HUR reports the destruction of a Russian fighter jet on an airport in Rostov-on-Don by a sabotage act. The Kremlin has yet to respond to these claims.

At the White House, Trump declared that he has his own deadline for the end of the war. He demands that Russia and Ukraine sit down for negotiations. Both sides want peace, he added. Trump also believes that Putin will listen to his appeals to halt the attacks on Ukraine. Infrastructure in Kyiv is still recovering from a recent deadly assault by Russian forces.

Overall, the conflict in Ukraine remains a complex political chess game, with Trump pushing for talks between Russia and Ukraine, while Putin continues to exert control over contested territories. The role of important players like NATO, the U.S., and individual leaders like Trump and Putin will shape the course of the conflict in the coming days.
