Drone Strikes on Russian Air Bases: An Unprecedented Escalation
Russia experiences extensive damage to multiple aircrafts as Ukrainian drone assault penetrates deeper Russian territories.
In a bold and daring move, Ukrainian forces have orchestrated a series of drone strikes targeting several Russian air bases on June 1, 2025. The audacious attack, which took more than a year to plan, saw Ukrainian forces destroy at least 40 Russian warplanes, including high-value aircraft like Tu-95 Bear, Tu-22M Backfire, and Tu-160 Blackjack bombers, as well as A-50 Mainstay airborne early warning and control aircraft.
The assault, the first of its kind, struck air bases deep within Russian territory, including Belaya, Dyagilevo, Ivanovo, Olenya, and Ukrainka. The operation involved drones transported in containers carried by trucks deep into Russian territory, before they hit their targets at several airfields on Sunday afternoon.
Moscow has previously used Tupolev Tu-95 and Tu-22 long-range bombers to launch missiles at Ukraine, while A-50s are used to coordinate targets and detect air defenses and guided missiles.
The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, personally oversaw the drone attack, according to sources. The strike comes just a day before Ukrainian and Russian officials are set to meet for a second round of ceasefire talks in Istanbul, Turkey.
Interestingly, President Donald Trump and his administration were not warned of the attack ahead of time. The White House has clarified that they were not involved in this operation.

While Russia's response to the drone attacks is still unfolding, satellite imagery shows at least four Tu-95s likely damaged or destroyed at Belaya Air Base. Russian state media and milbloggers have framed Ukraine's actions as undermining Russia's nuclear stability, suggesting this could justify a nuclear response, though this is part of a broader pattern of nuclear saber-rattling.
Russian forces have continued to conduct large-scale drone and missile strikes against Ukraine, including an operation involving over 400 drones on the night of May 31 to June 1. There have been developments in potential peace negotiations, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky establishing a delegation to participate in talks aimed at ending the war. However, Russian officials have shown little interest in engaging in meaningful peace talks, despite these efforts.
Despite the ongoing military operations, there is no indication that a ceasefire is imminent. The consequences of these daring drone strikes and their impact on the future of the conflict remain to be seen.
