Russia dismisses accusations of encroaching upon Estonian aerial domain

Estonia has taken a significant step in requesting NATO to activate Article 4 of the Atlantic Treaty, following an incident involving the incursion of three Russian MiG-31 fighters into its airspace. The Russian fighters, allegedly part of Russia's new military initiative 'Eastern Sentinal', remained in Estonian airspace without permission for 12 minutes, causing concern among Estonian authorities. In response, Estonia summoned the Russian ambassador to protest against the incident. The Supreme Headquarters of the Allied Powers in Europe (SHAPE) made a statement regarding the incident, welcoming the swift and decisive response of the Atlantic Alliance. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte expressed his support, praising the alliance's air policing mission over the Baltic states, led by Italy since August 2025, and with Germany participating from March to November 2024. During the incident, Italian F-35s, US-made combat aircraft, intercepted the Russian fighters in Estonian airspace. In addition to the Italian Air Force's F-35s, quick reaction aircraft from Sweden and Finland also responded to the incident. The Government of Estonia denounced the entry of the Russian fighters into its airspace, with Estonian Prime Minister Michal Kristen speaking with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte about the incident. Ukraine has suggested an 'energetic' response to the Russian fighter incursion. Article 4 of the Atlantic Treaty foresees consultations between allies in case of threat. The activation of this article indicates that Estonia considers the incident a threat to its sovereignty and security. This incident underscores the importance of NATO's air policing mission and its role in maintaining peace and security in the region. It also highlights the need for continued vigilance and cooperation among NATO members in the face of potential threats.
