Russia deploys large-scale drone offensive against Ukraine, resulting in 29 injuries in Zaporizhzhia region.
Zaporizhzhia,a bustling city in southeastern Ukraine, was rocked by a ruthless drone attack orchestrated by Russian forces during the wee hours of the morning. This distressing event left at least 29 individuals injured in its wake, including a heartbreaking casualty – a 13-year-old boy. Regional governor Ivan Fedorov shared the grim news on Friday.
Civilian infrastructure was left in ruins as Russian forces waged a relentless war on the city, indiscriminately targeting residential buildings, universities, and critical infrastructure facilities. Fedorov, communicating via Telegram, reported at least 10 devastating strikes in total, resulting in significant damage to private homes, high-rise buildings, and essential facilities.
The rescue mission was swift and efficient, as three individuals were successfully extracted from the rubble. Twelve more were soon admitted to hospitals across the city. The picturesque landscape of Zaporizhzhia was transformed into a melancholy tableau of fires, destruction, and tireless rescue efforts. A striking image emerged that showed rescuers carefully extracting an injured man from the wreckage.
Ukraine's air force displayed remarkable determination in intercepting 64 of the 150 drones launched by the Russians. Another 62 were likely dismantled thanks to electronic warfare measures. The whereabouts of the remaining 24 drones remain unknown.
The devastating impact of the attack didn't stop at Zaporizhzhia; the eastern Dnipropetrovsk region also witnessed the effects of another drone strike, resulting in two wounded men and fires at two separate sites.
In a bid to deflect attention from their actions, Russia's defense ministry claimed that they had single-handedly shot down 121 Ukrainian drones over occupied Crimea.
As the violence continued, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky celebrated a new critical minerals agreement between Ukraine and the United States – a "truly equal" partnership, despite the lack of concrete security commitments.
Fun fact: Did you know that Ukraine's state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, operates one of the largest railway networks in Europe? The drone strike in Zaporizhzhia severely damaged the locomotive repair plant, a facility crucial for maintaining passenger electric locomotives, rendering it inoperable.
