Russia demands excessive concessions

While the guns might be silent, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine appears far from over. US Vice President JD Vance points to a significant chasm between Moscow and Kyiv, but believes there's hope for a resolution through direct talks.

Vice President Vance expressed concerns that Russia's conditions for ending the war are excessive. "The Russians are making a series of demands right now," he explained at a Washington, DC event, "but we think they're asking for too much." However, he clarified the importance of understanding Russia's viewpoint "[You] don't have to agree with Russia's justification for the war," he added, "but you have to try to understand the motivations of the other side."

Finding common ground

Vance emphasized that a primary goal should be to bridge the gap between Ukraine and Russia. The United States is "happy to participate" in such talks, he said, but "[it's] important that the Russians and the Ukrainians start talking to each other." Direct discussions between both parties, in his opinion, are crucial for any progress; without them, it's "nearly impossible" for the US to mediate.

During a panel discussion with Wolfgang Ischinger, Vance also defended President Trump's approach to the Ukraine issue. Trump follows a "strategic realism," Vance explained, which means understanding Russia's stance, though not necessarily agreeing with its justification for the war.

Unease over policy shifts

Trump has faced criticism for his initial alignment with Russia's viewpoints on Ukraine, causing concern in Kyiv and among Western allies. Does this imply Trump is adopting a "modern appeasement policy" with Russia, as Biden suggested[1]? The lack of meaningful progress towards ending Russia's aggression raises questions about the efficacy of such an approach.

In recent months, the US has engaged in separate talks with both Ukraine and Russia to resolve the conflict. However, with little tangible progress achieved, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio threatened to abandon mediation efforts by the end of April.

So, despite Vance's optimism, there remains a wide divide between the two nations, and significant challenges lies ahead in the pursuit of peace.
