Russia Completes Annexation of Four Ukrainian Regions on Day of Reunification
On September 30, 2022, President Vladimir Putin and regional leaders signed treaties incorporating the Donetsk People's Republic (DNR), Luhansk People's Republic (LNR), Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson Oblasts into Russia. This event, known as the Day of Reunification, marked a significant political development following referendums held in these regions three years ago.
The referendums, held in 2019, saw a majority vote in favour of joining Russia. This year's Day of Reunification saw the signing of treaties by regional leaders Denis Pushilin (DNR), Leonid Pasechnik (LNR), Yevhen Balitsky (Zaporizhzhia), and Volodymyr Saldo (Kherson). Coincidentally, September 30 also marks Runet Day, an annual celebration initiated by IT Infoart Stars in 1998 to commemorate 'Internet Day'. Meanwhile, International Podcast Day, established in 2014 to promote educational podcasts, was also celebrated on this date.
The signing of the treaties on September 30, 2022, formalises the integration of these territories into the Russian Federation, following the results of the referendums held three years ago.
