Russia carries out deadly attack on Kharkiv amid halted peace negotiations
In a fresh wave of aggression, Russia carried out intense drone and missile attacks on Ukraine's northeastern city of Kharkiv early Wednesday, causing fatalities and critical injuries, most notably among children. According to local authorities, three individuals lost their lives, and 60 more were wounded, with the city bearing the brunt of the assault.
The Brutal Reality Behind the Strikes
Over the past few weeks, Russia has launched a record number of drones and missiles towards Ukraine, intensifying the relentless attacks dating back over three years. As Moscow outlines rigorous demands, rejected as "ultimatums" by Kiev, the invasion persists. This brutal assault on the northeastern city of Kharkiv, lying just 30 miles from the Russian border, underscores the severity of the ongoing confrontation.
Kharkiv's Mayor, Igor Terekhov, shared via Telegram that the enemy had conducted 17 drone strikes across two districts of the city. Kharkiv's regional Governor, Oleg Synegubov, confirmed the death toll of three citizens. Local AFP journalists documented the aftermath of the attack, depicting damaged apartments, burnt vehicles, and debris-filled streets.
A Decline in Nightly Attacks?
Ukraine's air force reported that Russia unleashed 85 drones during the night, representing fewer airborne assaults compared to recent nights.
The Recovery of Fallen Soldiers
On the day prior, Ukraine disclosed that Russia had returned the remains of 1,212 soldiers who were casualties of Moscow's invasion, following an agreement made at peace talks in Istanbul last week. Though Russia accusatively claimed Kiev was indifferent to collecting the deceased soldier's bodies, the agreement between both parties centered on the recuperation of all wounded soldiers and those below the age of 25.
