Get a Jacket, Moscow Mates! Unusual Weather Ahead Until May 11

Hey there, folks! Grab your jackets because it's gonna be a chilly start to spring in the Moscow region and surrounding areas. Brrr! The Scientific Director of Russia's Hydrometeorological Center, Roman Vilfand, dropped a bombshell—an unexpected frost is expected to grizzle central European regions of Russia until May 11.

Vilfand,, a meteorologist extraordinaire, warned that an icy cold snap is on its way to the westernmost point of the country, the Kaliningrad region. Temperatures will plummet to a frosty –5°C. In other urban regions like Vladimir, Smolensk, Kostroma, Rяazan, Tula, Moscow, Kaluga, Bryansk, Yaroslavl, and Tver, you may need to brace yourself for night and morning frosts of up to –3°C.

But here's the kicker—while some parts of the country are getting a blast of cold, it's gonna be scorching hot in Asian Russia, particularly in southern areas of Western Siberia. Temperatures will sizzle up to +30°C and above. In the southern areas of the Krasnoyarsk region, it'll be hot and steamy with temperatures around +20°C. In Khakassia and western Irkutsk region, the thermometer could hit +20°C to +25°C.

Are you living in the Northwestern and Central Federal Districts of Russia? You'd better bundle up! Temperatures from May 8 to 11 will be a whopping 5-7°C below normal. On the flip side, Siberia will bask in warmth during the holidays, with temperatures 6-11°C above normal. But, no worries, most populated areas like Kemerovo, Novosibirsk, Omsk, and Tomsk regions, Krasnoyarsk region, and the Republic of Khakassia, as well as in Altai region and the Republic of Altai, are expected to be 6-9°C above normal from May 8 to 11.

Before you go, fun fact: Muscovites were just told to expect a warmer spell of weather. But don't bank on it too much; the weather forecast across Russia is all over the place and is bound to leave you saying, "WTF, Mother Nature!"

Russian weather patterns are experiencing a mix-up, with an unusual blend of cold snaps, frost, and swings in temperatures expected during the first part of May 2025. This unpredictable weather has raised concerns for outdoor activities, especially in densely populated areas like Moscow.

In Moscow and surrounding regions, temperatures are expected to dip significantly below the average for this time of year, with possible frosts on May 6 and 7, and cold temperatures continuing through May 11.

In contrast, the Volga Federal District, Mordovia, Krasnoyarsk region, and Siberia will experience warmer-than-average weather, with temperatures climbing as high as +30°C and above in Southern Western Siberia.

  1. The unexpected frosts predicted by the Scientific Director of Russia's Hydrometeorological Center, Roman Vilfand, will extend to Yaroslavl, a city in Russia's Northwestern Federal District, where temperatures might drop to as low as –3°C.
  2. In contrast to the chilly weather in Moscow and other urban regions, it's expected that Siberia, particularly the southern areas of Western Siberia, will see temperatures rise to above +30°C.
  3. The Hydrometeorological Center's forecast reveals that the weather in environmental-science terms remains unpredictable, with Siberia set to bask in warmth while Moscow and nearby areas experience an unusual chill until May 11.
  4. Interestingly, the weather forecast for Moscow includes a prediction of warmer temperatures, but overall, the weather patterns in Russia are expected to continue their unpredictable blend of cold snaps and swings in temperatures through the early part of May 2025.
