Russia and Iran Deepen Military Ties Amid Ukraine War and US Sanctions Shifts

Russia and Iran have strengthened their military ties since the start of the Ukraine war in early 2022. While no concrete evidence of Russian satellite data or drone strategies being directly supplied to Iran has emerged, intelligence sharing has reportedly improved Iran's ability to target US forces. The relationship remains pragmatic, with both nations cooperating in military and industrial sectors for years.

Since February 2022, Russia has provided Iran with intelligence on US military positions in the Middle East. This exchange has included satellite imagery and battlefield data, helping Iran refine its targeting capabilities. Russian advisors have also shared drone tactics developed during the Ukraine conflict, though no specific examples of Iranian attacks linked to this cooperation have been confirmed.

The two countries formalised their partnership in a January 2025 agreement, covering broad military cooperation. While most exchanges have involved Iranian supplies to Russia—such as Shahed drones—Moscow has offered strong political backing, pledging 'unwavering support' to Iran's new supreme leader. Despite this, Russia has not ruled out deeper military involvement in regional conflicts.

Meanwhile, the US has relaxed sanctions on Russian oil to stabilise global prices, a move critics argue has emboldened President Putin to prolong the war in Ukraine. Senior politicians claim this policy has indirectly strengthened Russia's position, allowing it to sustain military support for allies like Iran.

The Russia-Iran partnership remains focused on practical military and intelligence cooperation rather than a formal alliance. While no direct evidence ties Russian support to specific Iranian attacks, the exchange of surveillance data and drone expertise has enhanced Iran's precision targeting. The US sanctions relief on Russian oil, intended to control fuel costs, has also influenced the dynamics of the conflict in Ukraine.
