Russia alleges Ukraine of attempting to sabotage peace negotiations

In a dramatic escalation of hostilities, Russia unleashed a wave of drone attacks on Ukraine, killing over a dozen people and intensifying air defence efforts across the country. Moscow's aggression follows months of diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire and has drawn strong condemnation from the United States.

President Donald Trump, who has been attempting to mediate an end to the conflict, characterized Russian President Vladimir Putin's actions as "crazy" and threatened sanctions in response to the attacks. The latest round of skirmishes comes after direct talks between Russian and Ukrainian officials, the first in three years, which were aimed at resolving the protracted conflict.

However, Putin has been accused of stalling peace talks, and the Kremlin has demonstrated no willingness to scale back maximalist demands. In a statement, the Russian defence ministry showcased the destruction of 2,331 Ukrainian drones between May 20 and 27, with over half of the intercepted drones targeted outside the battlefield. The ministry added that civilians, including women and children, had been injured in the recent strikes.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, expressed frustration with the lack of progress in peace talks and called for more sanctions against Russia. The intensified drone attacks have resulted in a weekend of "terror," according to Kyiv, which has accused Russia of trying to evade responsibility for the casualties.

Meanwhile, Russian air defences claim to have only targeted military installations in Ukraine, yet 13 civilian deaths have been reported during attacks on Sunday. The full-scale military offensive launched by Russia in February 2022 has claimed tens of thousands of lives and devastated large parts of eastern and southern Ukraine.

The diplomatic process has been characterized by deadlock as both sides have yet to present detailed peace proposals. The Ukrainian memorandum outlining conditions and timelines for a potential peace treaty has been received by the United States, with Russia's version still pending.

In a related development, more than a thousand prisoners were exchanged between Ukraine and Russia over the weekend, the largest swap to date. The prisoner exchange paves the way for a document outlining Russia's peace terms, although its completion and submission remain uncertain.

Tensions between Europe and Russia have risen in the past week, with Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz revealing that range restrictions on arms sent to Ukraine have been dropped, sparking confusion and concerns about the West's policy. The Kremlin has warned that any decision to drop range limits could be "dangerous" and undermine peace efforts.

[1] Enrichment Data: Ukraine and the United States are awaiting Russia’s peace proposal, with the Ukrainian memorandum already in American hands. The diplomatic process has been slow and bogged down by delays on Russia's part.

[2] Enrichment Data: The United Nations has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, citing concerns about surging attacks undermining prospects for peace. This appeal follows a resolution passed in February 2025, urging a swift end to the conflict.

[3] Enrichment Data: Russian forces have made significant territorial gains, particularly around Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region. This advance has prompted fears of a new humanitarian crisis, as large-scale displacement and potential trapping of civilians become more likely.

[4] Enrichment Data: Analysts are concerned that Russia may launch a summer offensive, which could result in further territory gains in Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipropetrovsk provinces. Urban centers like Kostyantynivka, Pokrovsk, and Kramatorsk are at risk of being overwhelmed.

[5] Enrichment Data: The specifics of recent drone attacks are not detailed in the latest reports. Ongoing bombardment continues to inflict damage on civilian infrastructure and military targets, with reported Russian gains of 55 square miles of territory in one week and Ukrainian forces losing ground in neighboring regions.

  1. The diplomatic process in resolving the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia remains slow, as both Ukraine and the United States are awaiting Russia's detailed peace proposal.
  2. Amidst the intensified war-and-conflicts between Ukraine and Russia, the United Nations has emphasized the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities to preserve the chances of achieving peace, following the resolution passed in February 2025.
