Russia alleges drone assault on fuel station in Sochi on Sunday, attributed to Ukraine
On Sunday, August 3, 2025, Ukraine's military carried out a drone attack on Sochi airport in southern Russia. The attack targeted a fuel depot at the airfield, which hosts military jets, and resulted in a significant fire at the facility.
The Ukrainian General Staff confirmed the strike, reporting a strong fire at the facility housing Russian military aviation assets. The fire led to the suspension of flights at Sochi Airport to ensure air safety.
The attack is part of Ukraine's ongoing campaign to target Russian energy infrastructure critical to Moscow’s war effort. Sochi, rarely targeted during the conflict, experienced a fuel depot fire visible in videos circulated on social media.
Following the attack, Russian authorities imposed fuel restrictions at the airport, requiring some flights to refuel at alternate airfields. Russia also claimed to have shot down 93 drones in the same period, highlighting the intensity of drone activity during this phase of the conflict.
Additional related incidents include fines imposed on civilians filming the aftermath of the fire near Novominskaya village, close to where debris from downed drones fell, reflecting Russian efforts to control information about the attack’s impact.
The attack on the airfield adds to the ongoing tension between Ukraine and Russia. However, no immediate comment was made by Kyiv regarding the attack. The statement from the Ukrainian General Staff did not address any claims of responsibility for the attack, and it did not provide any further details about the incident. Russian local authorities, on the other hand, blamed Ukraine for the attack on Sunday.
It is unclear whether the attack on the airfield caused any damage to the military jets at the facility. The reporting of the attack was done by Yuliia Dysa. The statement from the Ukrainian General Staff was edited by Alison Williams.
