Russia allegedly lacks the power to launch a substantial military offensive, according to Zelensky.
The Ukrainian military is set to receive additional air defense systems, with the US manufacturer Raytheon supplying Patriot missiles through a Direct Commercial Sale. Germany has also ordered additional PAC-2 GEM-T missiles to bolster its stock, as several Western countries, including the US and Norway, have pledged support for Ukraine's defense involving such systems.
The missiles for the Patriot and Himars air defense systems are part of the first two packages under the new NATO mechanism PURL, worth a total of 1 billion US dollars. This mechanism, coordinating the delivery of weapons to Ukraine, has already provided more than two billion US dollars to Ukraine.
The anticipated deliveries are expected to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities, particularly in the eastern Ukrainian Donetsk region, where the situation is reportedly critical. Ukrainian commander-in-chief, Oleksiy Syrsky, has highlighted the front sections in Pokrovsk, Dobropillia, and at the border with the Dnipropetrovsk region in Nowopawliwka as areas of concern.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky believes that Russia is currently unable to launch a major offensive in its war of aggression against Ukraine. He stated that Russia has lost so many soldiers that it cannot carry out strong additional actions. This assessment cannot currently be independently verified.
The operation in Sumy has already failed, according to Zelensky, with Russia suffering heavy losses, especially in human life, and redeploying troops to other fronts. The Ukrainian armed forces have inflicted even greater losses on Russia in the operation in Sumy.
Ukraine anticipates further funds in October, bringing the total amount to around 3.6 billion US dollars. Zelensky mentioned that Russia had prepared offensive operations along four main axes this year: Sumy, Nowopawliwka, Pokrovsk, and Saporishshia. The imminent delivery of missiles for the Patriot and Himars air defense systems is expected to provide valuable support in these critical areas.
The NATO alliance coordinates the implementation of weapons deliveries procured in the USA for Kyiv but financed by Ukraine's partners through the NATO mechanism PURL. The operation in Sumy has underscored the importance of these deliveries in Ukraine's ongoing struggle against Russia's aggression.
