Civilians Killed, Injured in Russian Attacks on Sumy City: Zelensky Slams Kremlin for Intentional Strike

Russia allegedly carries out targeted assault on civilian population in Sumy, asserts Zelenskyy.

FacebookTwitterWhatsappE-MailPrintCopy LinkFollowing a brutal morning assault by Russian Rocket forces on the city of Sumy, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky blasted the Kremlin for deliberately focusing on civilian areas. In a scathing social media post on Tuesday, Zelensky pointed a finger squarely at Moscow, declaring it a blatant act of intentional aggression against civilians.

Three innocent lives were senselessly lost in these vicious attacks, and nearly 20 more were left injured, according to Oleh Grygorow, head of the city administration. Damage also extended to a medical facility, vehicular traffic, and homes across the cityscape.

As the Russian army reported their latest territorial conquest — the village of Andrijiwka, just five kilometers from the Russian border — local authorities in Sumy are left reeling from the physical and emotional toll these relentless attacks have wrought upon their community.

Bordered by instability, the region of Sumy has unfortunately become a hotbed of military activity. With tensions mounting, fears circulate about a potential large-scale offensive by Russian soldiers on the region. These escalations are concerning, as reminders of last year's surprise Ukrainian offensive in the neighboring Russian region of Kursk still echo in the hearts of those who lived through it.

More than 30 lives were claimed by a Russian ballistic missile strike on Sumy City back in April. In the past week, President Zelensky revealed that Russia has amassed over 50,000 soldiers along the border, further exacerbating the volatile climate of the Sumy region.

As the landscape of Sumy City transforms from chaos to an eerie stillness, the weighty questions of who, why, and what happens next continue to resonate in the minds of those on both sides of the conflict.

The Commission, amidst the escalating violence in Sumy City, has yet to adopt a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, a concern heightened by Russia's relentless attacks. The ongoing war-and-conflicts in Ukraine, marked by violent skirmishes and devastating aerial bombings, are not merely political conflicts but also general news that profoundly impact the daily lives of civilians.
