A Blatant Assault on Sumy: Zelensky Calls Out Russia's Attack on Civilians
Russian military allegedly launches targeted assault on civilians in Sumy, claimed by Selenskyy. - Russia alleged to have intentionally targeted civilians in Sumy, according to Zelenskyy's claims.
In a heated argument over the recent catastrophe, Zelensky slammed Russia for intentionally targeting Sumy. On June 3, 2025, this Ukrainian city, about 30 kilometers from the Russian border, was decimated by a Russian missile strike during the morning rush hour. As a result, at least four innocent lives were lost, and 28 others, including three children, were injured.
Taking to online platforms, Sumy's Mayor, Oleh Grygorow, announced the horrendous scene. Apart from the loss of life, houses, a medical facility, and vehicles were left in ruins. This carnage was wreaked using long-range multiple-launch rocket systems, suggestive of the dreadful precision employed by the Russian army.
While the Russian army claimed to capture another location in the Sumy region, taking control of the village of Andrijiwka, sitting roughly five kilometers from the border, Ukraine anticipates a massive reprisal from the Russian forces towards the border region of Sumy. The memories of the last year's surprise offensive by Ukraine in the neighboring Russian region of Kursk linger, as Russian forces regained control over the lost territory gradually.
Last April, a similar catastrophic missile attack on the city of Sumy claimed over 30 lives. Amidst this ongoing violence, Zelensky reported that Russia has positioned over 50,000 soldiers along their front in the region.
The Sumy Oblast, situated in northeastern Ukraine, has been under relentless Russian attacks since the start of the full-scale invasion. Elements of the Russian 106th Airborne Division (VDV) have been spotted striking Ukrainian positions, and drone elements from the "Rubikon" Center for Advanced Unmanned Technologies have targeted areas near Pavlivka.
However, Ukrainian forces have been actively retaliating, scoring a recent counterstrike against Russian missile launchers involved in attacks on Kharkiv.
As per the Ukrainian government, Zelensky has been advocating for increased international intervention to halt Russia's attacks, labeling Moscow's actions as those of a "terrorist state." On the other hand, Moscow has resorted to a more aggressive approach towards Ukrainian positions in recent weeks, employing small squads of soldiers for rapid movement using motorcycles and ATVs.
The frequent shelling incidents in the Sumy region have resulted in numerous civilian casualties and extensive infrastructure damage. Despite the Ukrainian Air Force's best efforts, the continued use of advanced military technology by Russia poses an ongoing challenge to Ukrainian defenses.
