Russia aims to utilize the Alaska summit for time-buying, according to Zelensky's assertion.

In the lead-up to the highly anticipated meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed a cautious approach to the summit's potential outcomes.

Zelensky, who has been seeking stronger support from the United States, views the summit as insufficient in resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Following the summit, he announced his intention to meet with Trump to discuss further actions. This indicates that he perceives the summit's outcome as falling short of resolving the conflict and is actively pursuing direct engagement with the US leadership to enhance diplomatic and possibly military support.

Trump, for his part, has expressed a desire to see a ceasefire in the conflict. However, Putin, according to Zelensky, is not preparing for a ceasefire but is aiming for a "personal victory" from the summit with Trump. This suggests that Putin may view the meeting as an opportunity to advance his own interests rather than to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Zelensky has also had conversations with other world leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, before the summit. These conversations may indicate a broader international effort to find a solution to the conflict in Ukraine.

Zelensky has reiterated that decisions about Ukraine's future and the security of Ukrainians must include Ukraine's involvement and be accompanied by security guarantees. He believes the Russian-American summit in Alaska is a ploy by Moscow to stall, not end the war. In fact, Zelensky claims that Russian troops have been redeployed to launch new offensives, and that Russia's "hostile attacks" on Ukraine's civilian infrastructure and ordinary people support this claim.

Trump has hinted at a potential meeting between Zelensky and Putin, suggesting a possible tripartite meeting involving Trump, Zelensky, and Putin. He has also offered to join a meeting between Zelensky and Putin if necessary. However, Zelensky has stated that there are no signs that the Russian military has received signals to prepare for a post-war situation.

In a previous post, Zelensky expressed optimism about peace, but only if it is real, lasting, and linked to security guarantees. He has maintained this stance, emphasising the need for a meaningful resolution to the conflict that prioritises the security and sovereignty of Ukraine.

As the meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska approaches, the world will be watching closely to see if any progress can be made towards finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.

  1. The European Union, having a responsibility to ensure that the EU's foreign policy is implemented effectively, should consider a proactive approach to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, given the international implications of the situation and the upcoming summit between Trump and Putin.
  2. Amidst the war-and-conflicts, policy-and-legislations, and politics revolving around the conflict in Ukraine, the implementation of, and commitment to, policy guarantees from both the US and the European Union is crucial to achieving a general news-worthy peaceful resolution.
