Drone crash in eastern Poland: Warsaw accuses Russia of provoking incident - Russia accused of instigating provocations in Warsaw
In a recent incident, a drone crash near the Polish village of Przewodów, close to the Ukrainian border, has raised concerns and accusations of deliberate provocation by Russia. The drone, which was found in a cornfield in Osiny, a town located about a hundred kilometers south of Warsaw, caused no casualties but resulted in damages to nearby buildings.
The incident took place overnight on Wednesday, as reported by the police. The Prosecutor's Office stated that the object found in the field is "most likely" a military drone. The exact type of drone remains unclear, with suggestions pointing towards a Russian Shahed-136 model or a close variant thereof, or possibly a Gerbera drone with a Chinese engine, closely related to the Shahed family used by Russia.
Polish authorities have confirmed the incident as a violation of Polish sovereignty, resulting in Poland sending a diplomatic protest note to Russia. Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, a Polish politician, has further suggested that the drone incident could be a provocation by Russia.
The drone, which flew at very low altitudes to avoid radar detection, exploded upon crashing into the cornfield. The presence of explosives and the nature of the drone indicate it was not an accident but a form of provocation.
The army reported that there was no violation of Polish airspace overnight on Wednesday. However, almost a year earlier, a Russian missile briefly entered the airspace of NATO member Poland, causing alarm but no casualties.
This latest incident comes amid ongoing peace talks related to the war in Ukraine. Polish officials have strongly condemned the drone crash, viewing it as a direct threat to their sovereignty and a breach of international norms.
