Russia, according to Zelensky, lacks the prowess for launching another significant offensive.
In a significant move, the Russian State Duma has unanimously decided to withdraw Russia from the European Convention against Torture. This decision comes amidst allegations of insufficient cooperation in the death of opposition figure Alexei Navalny and suspected torture of Ukrainian prisoners of war.
Meanwhile, tensions are escalating in Eastern Europe, with Germany reinforcing NATO's Eastern flank. The German government has extended and doubled its Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) Eurofighter presence for airspace monitoring over Poland until at least the end of 2025. This deployment is part of the NATO operation 'Eastern Sentry,' designed to protect the Eastern flank and coordinated among Allies.
The escalation seems to be a response to recent incidents, such as the incursion of Russian drones into Polish airspace. In response, NATO is reinforcing its eastern flank, bringing in troops and resources from several member states for defense.
The conflict in Ukraine continues to take a heavy toll. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reported losses of around 100 Russian soldiers and 2,500 soldiers on the Russian side, including 1,300 dead. He also stated that Russia is currently unable to launch major offensives due to heavy losses.
Unfortunately, civilian casualties continue to mount. At least five people have been killed in a Russian bombing attack on the eastern Ukrainian city of Kostjantyniwka. Elsewhere, a Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian border region of Belgorod resulted in the death of one person and the injury of another.
Ukraine is receiving support in its fight against Russia. The new US fund 'PURL' is set to provide missiles for Western air defense systems to Ukraine. Over two billion US dollars have already been pledged by partner countries, with further funding of up to 3.6 billion dollars expected in October.
Meanwhile, Poland is looking to improve its own security by learning from Ukraine's experience in drone warfare. A joint working group is being set up with Ukraine for this purpose.
The conflict has also had global repercussions. The European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced an initiative to accelerate the halt of Russian oil and gas imports and plans a 19th sanctions package targeting banks, the energy sector, and cryptocurrencies.
As the situation continues to unfold, it is clear that the conflict in Ukraine is having far-reaching effects, both within the region and beyond. The international community will continue to monitor the situation closely.
