Russell Westbrook of the Nuggets Needs Hand Surgery Due to Two Fractures

Denver Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook has undergone surgery to repair fractures in his right hand, as confirmed by him through his newsletter, Word of Westbrook. The injuries are believed to have occurred during the 2024–25 NBA regular season.

In a heartfelt message, Westbrook expressed his gratitude for the support throughout the season and shared his anticipation for a swift return to peak form, "The comeback is already in motion #WhyNot."

During the regular season, Westbrook featured in 75 games, averaging 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 1.4 steals. His shooting percentages were 44.9% from the field, 32.3% from three, and 66.1% from the free-throw line.

In the playoffs, Westbrook's stats dropped, averaging 11.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 13 games. His field goal and three-point percentages saw a decline, shooting 39.1% from the field and 31.7% from three.

Westbrook has a player option worth $3.5 million for the 2025–26 season, and it is expected that he will exercise this option and continue his tenure with the Nuggets, given his enjoyable season in Denver. He was most effective when sharing the court with Nikola Jokic.

The Nuggets ended the regular season with a record of 50–32, falling in the West semifinals to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a seven-game series.

With Westbrook's recovery underway, the focus shifts to the team's depth beyond him. Following the injury and surgery, the Nuggets must rely heavily on Westbrook and Peyton Watson.

Julian Strawther and Jalen Pickett are anticipated to make significant strides during the offseason. Additionally, Watson is expected to enhance his offensive capabilities. While Watson boasts a respectable three-point percentage of 35.3%, his two attempts per game suggest a need for greater comfort with the shot.

Improving three-point shooting depth would significantly benefit the team, as it would make Jokic even more formidable. Additionally, it would likely simplify Westbrook's decision-making process on the court.

  1. The Denver Nuggets will be counting on Russell Westbrook to assist them in the upcoming playoffs, as he recovers from surgery on his fractured right hand.
  2. Despite his dip in stats during the playoffs compared to the regular season, Westbrook's consistent performance throughout the finals of the 2024–25 NBA season demonstrated his importance to the team.
  3. With Westbrook recovering, the focus shifts to the Nuggets' sports strategy, especially their reliance on the duo of Westbrook and Peyton Watson.
  4. To strengthen their team, the Nuggets hope that players like Julian Strawther and Jalen Pickett will make significant strides during the offseason, while also working to improve 3-point shooting depth, which would significantly benefit both Westbrook and Nikola Jokic.
