Rural town Barcenillas, home to roughly 100 residents, thrives with LGTBIQ+ pride celebration in its heartland, introducing diversity amidst the tranquil countryside.
💎Flaunting Pride in the Heart of Barcenillas:
Hold on to your rainbow flags, y'all! The charming town of Barcenillas, nestled in the Cantabrian region, is gearing up to flaunt its colors for the fourth annual AgroPride festival.
On June 7, this quaint little town will be bustling with life, advocating for the LGTBIQ+ community that resides in the heart of the countryside. Pedro J. Gutiérrez Pardo, a resident and one of the original crusaders of this movement, shares his thoughts with TVE, "I wish it weren't necessary today, but we still see that we have to continue this fight."
In 2022, the Cultural Association of Barcenillas took up the challenge of bringing Pride to the rural environment, and ever since, AgroPride has been exploring new heights.
"There's no problem with any neighbor. Everyone lends a hand!", assures Alejandro Gómez, the president of the association, who boasts about the local support they receive. They generously offer tractors, carts, and even meadows for parking.
With a population of just over a hundred inhabitants, Barcenillas expects to welcome up to a thousand people this year. Apart from filling the town with vibrant energy and acceptance, the celebration also gives a much-needed boost to the town's economy. "It's one of the busiest days of the year", confirms Marta Fernández of Asador La Central to TVE.
Let's Party Like It's 2023!
Beginning at 4:00 PM, Barcenillas will be painted with music, color, and a ceremony entwined with advocacy. The jam-packed program features workshops, talks, parades, performances, and a festive atmosphere that will make the streets echo with laughter and solidarity till the wee hours.
The event will see the participation of LGTBIQ+ activists, drag artists, musicians, and cultural representatives. The festivities kick off with the reading of a manifesto that will amplify the voices of those continuing to fight for the recognition and respect of their rights across every nook and cranny of the land.
AgroPride has established itself as a beacon in Cantabria and inspiring other rural areas of the country, demonstrating that the fight for equality and visibility knows no bounds—not even those of the countryside.

The average number of people expected to attend AgroPride in Barcenillas this year exceeds the town's usual population. This indicates a surge of interest in the festival, which might be attributed to the vibrant fashion-and-beauty displays and performances, as well as the presence of celebrities and cultural representatives. In today's pop-culture landscape, such events are often shared and amplified on social-media platforms, gaining significant attention and boosting the visibility of the LGTBIQ+ community and their lifestyle. The celebration serves not only as a source of entertainment and a showcase of pride but also as a platform for talks and workshops, aiming to educate and advocate for the continued acceptance and respect of the community's rights.
